New York DMV Launches Online Tool for Non-Driver’s License Applications

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched an online tool to facilitate the process of obtaining a non-driver’s license.

Through this page, interested parties will be able to review the requirements and pre-qualify to find out if they are eligible to obtain a non-driver ID.

In addition to reviewing the documents you must carry.

The objective, explained the commissioner of the Department, Mark JF Schroeder, is that they can obtain their identification in a single visit to the offices.

“The prescreening service is part of a much larger effort at DMV to better serve our customers and achieve our ‘one visit and go’ goal,” he said.

Any person of any age with legal status in the Country can obtain a non-driver identification card.

Non-driver license and identification process in New York

Here are the requirements to obtain either a driver’s license or a non-driver identification:

It is important to note that these types of IDs are NOT valid to board a domestic flight or to enter a federal building.

But they are valid within the State of New York.

Which are the requirements?

Proof of Name and date of Birth
This can be an original birth certificate from your country of origin, an expired legal resident card or expired employment authorization card, or a consular identity document.

Proof of residence in New York
To show that you live in New York State, you can submit documents such as a utility bill from where you live, a tax return stub, or a refugee travel document.

Social Security number
If the interested parties do not have a legal residence in the country, they may not have a social security number, but they can still process the document.

“There are people who don’t have a social security, but what they have to do is fill out a letter at the DMV stating that they haven’t received a social security number yet,” said Make The Road’s Yatiziri Tovar.
