New York Cuts Billion-Dollar Police Budget, Trump Is Furious

New York City announced on Wednesday that it would save $1 billion, or about 887 million euros, from the annual police budget.

The city council has approved a budget that takes this new situation into account. Calls to reduce the budgets allocated to the police force have indeed multiplied across the country since the end of May and the death of George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter movement advocates for the money saved to be reinvested in housing, education, healthcare and disadvantaged areas.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the police budget had thus been increased from $6 billion to $5 billion.

Some advisers, however, felt that this was not correct and that $400 million would still go to the police but through the Department of Education. School security costs would then be transferred to this department.

The decision to cut the police budget did not please the American president, who reacted on Twitter.
