New York could pay to report illegally parked cars – NBC New York

NEW YORKNew York City has a new proposal for New Yorkers to report illegally parked vehicles, and that would give them a reward.

The bill, presented to the city council, would give practitioners 25 percent of a $ 175, or $ 44, fine.

Participating New Yorkers will submit photos or videos of vehicles blocking bike lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, and school entrances or exits.

Under the bill, the Department of Transportation (DOT) would set up a civil reporting program where complaints would be filed. The DOT would then take the evidence to the Administrative Trials and Hearings Office to determine if the 25% bonus would be awarded.

Councilor Lincoln Restler, who sponsored the legislation and is supported by nearly two dozen other council members, told Bloomberg that the city isn’t handing out enough fines.

“I feel the security risks associated with illegal parking every day,” Restler said. “It is even more of a problem for the parent pushing a stroller or a person in a wheelchair who cannot cross the curb due to illegally parked cars. This is why we are creating, in this legislation, a new structure to obtain real responsibility ”.

Legislation has yet to make its way into the Council process.
