A change of format and venue for the final would be the novelties that the UEFA want to implement for the 2024/2025 season of the Champions League. In information published by the British newspaper The Sun, it is indicated that the end of that season would be played in New York City.
The president of the governing body of European football, Alexander Cheferin, declared in 2016 that a final outside the old continent was possible, but it should be studied in the future because “ir from Portugal to Azerbaijan, for example, is almost the same as going to New York”.
With the finals of the next four years assigned (Istanbul 2021, Saint Petersburg 2022, Munich 2023 and London in 2024), the final of 2025 would close a year of renewal within the maximum club competition in Europe.
The tournament will be played between 36 teams, a format that the board expects to be maintained for nine seasons. In addition, taking the decisive game for the title to the U.S it would bring a great economic benefit to UEFA from the sale of television rights.
The income report published by the European football organization for the 2018/2019 season, the last one with available official data, indicates that only with the sale of broadcasting rights a profit of 3,309.4 million euros was obtained.
The stage where the event would take place would be the MetLife Stadium, which has a capacity for 82,500 people, and which is also home to the Jets and Giants, NFL teams.
So far, the proposal has not been accepted by several European leagues, including the English Premier League. However, this would not stop UEFA from implementing its renewal project for the 2024/2025 season.
