New York: confinement measures extended until April 29

(New York) The governor of New York state, the epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States, announced Monday to extend the containment measures to April 29, requiring the closure of schools and all non-essential activities.

“If the curve turns” and “the infection rate drops,” “it’s because social distancing is working, it must be continued and non-essential activities will remain closed until April 29,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo during his daily press briefing.

“This is not the time to relax,” he added as the number of daily deaths has stabilized for two days in this state.

The pandemic has killed a total of 4,758 people there, for more than 130,000 recorded cases, out of a total population of nearly 20 million inhabitants.

New York State alone accounts for nearly half of the 9,700 deaths reported Monday in the United States by Johns Hopkins University, and more than a third of some 339,000 cases.

In the past two days, the state’s daily death toll from the pandemic, however, appeared to peak just below 600, after a record 630 from Friday to Saturday.

“Whether we hit the peak or not, the same should be done,” Governor Cuomo said to justify his decision to extend the lockdown, as many are anxious to revive economic activity.

“There is a real danger in becoming overconfident. We have underestimated (the epidemic) since day one and we have paid the price, ”he said. “Hong Kong made this mistake, South Korea made this mistake. We are not going to make that mistake ”.
