NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – After the full approval of the corona vaccine from Biontech (BioNTech (ADRs)) and Pfizer in the USA, the city of New York announced the mandatory injection of the vaccine for all school employees. Among other things, teachers and all other officials and people in contact with students should have received at least one dose by September 27, said Mayor Bill de Blasio in New York on Monday. At first it remained open what would happen to those who refuse the vaccination anyway.
“New York City sends a strong message: We will do everything we can to fight the Delta variant, to fight Covid,” said Mayor de Blasio, referring to the increasing number of infected people. The full approval of the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine, which had recently been announced by the responsible US agency FDA, was a turning point in the fight against the pandemic. Previously, vaccine skeptics in many areas of public life had been given the option of avoiding vaccination through regular tests.
In New York, almost all Covid restrictions had fallen at the beginning of the summer in view of the advancing vaccination campaign – but the Delta variant recently heated up the spread again. The largest US city could now be followed by similar decisions in other cities./scb/DP/jha
