Newly arrived immigrants to New York City face a grim reality, the lack of opportunities to work in the absence of permits to do so legally.
The immigration crisis in the Big Apple seems to have no end and hundreds of new asylum seekers arrive in the City every day.
Patricia Moposito is one of the people staying at a shelter located in Manhattan.
She added that it has been hard for her to start her new life in this country.
“This country is hard but we have to fight,” he lamented.
“They lent me some money to invest here, but unfortunately they don’t let us work properly,” he added.
Moposito has been selling drinks on the street for two weeks with a cart that he rescued from a dump.
“They have to reconsider that one is just arrived and better that they open their hands with a job,” he asked.
Just like her, there are dozens of stories in New York shelters where more than 60,000 asylum seekers are housed.
Many of them decided to migrate from their countries due to insecurity.
On several occasions the City government has requested the federal authorities to allow the issuance of temporary work permits for newcomers.
In addition, they have insisted on substantive actions to resolve the crisis, since they assure that the current scenario is unsustainable.
“In the absence of significant policy changes that would alter the course of this crisis, we have been forced to play an unsustainable game, opening one shelter after another,” the Mayor’s office said in a statement.
