New York City Weather Forecast: Rain, Snow, and Cold Ahead

What you should know

  • The weather will remain rainy and gray through Friday morning. Precipitation will stop Friday at noon, but clouds will remain until Saturday.
  • For Sunday, wind and rain return, which can turn to snow from Sunday night to Monday morning. Up to 3 inches is expected for the immediate New York City area, although projections are subject to change.
  • Once that system leaves, January temperatures will return in the 30s until at least the middle of next week.

The tri-state area has been experiencing gray, rainy days, and the weather forecast says snow is expected to return to our area soon.

Initial projections indicate that places in and around New York City could get up to 3 inches of snow overnight Sunday into Monday, while estimates are higher for those further north. The lower half of New Jersey does not appear to be affected at this time, although a lot could change in the coming days. These numbers are likely to change.

But first, Thursday began with gray skies and light rain in the New York area, as well as a layer of fog that decreased visibility, the Weather Authority shared. Temperatures were also in the high 40s and low 50s.

Light rain and drizzle will continue Thursday afternoon and evening with temperatures approaching, but not quite reaching, 60 degrees. The heat will drop Thursday night as temperatures drop into the 40s.

The rain is not expected to end until midday Friday, but clouds will remain through the beginning of the weekend. Saturday still looks like it’s going to be the best day before another storm brings more rain and even some snow that will continue into Monday, which may impact the morning commute and back to school, especially in our northern suburbs where accumulations can be several inches.

How much snow are we getting?

New York City recorded its first one-inch snowfall in Central Park in nearly two full years earlier this month. Could this upcoming weekend herald even more things to come? One thing seems certain right now: temperatures will feel more like January.
