Unlike Europe, the US is not ready to ban thermal cars by 2035. But even there we are starting to push for electric vehicles and electrified models. President Joe Biden’s administration also hopes to build a new fleet of 50% electrified models by 2025, including 100% electric cars but also hybrid models. And California, the most advanced state in terms of environmental policies, plans to completely ban the sale of 100% thermal cars by 2035.
And we learn that the state of New York intends to do the same. Governor Kathy Hochul just said the state intends to introduce the same rules as California. It will propose to adopt its plan to gradually ban the sale of vehicles equipped with 100% internal combustion engines, with exactly the same deadlines: before reaching 33% electrified vehicles in new car sales by 2026, then increase the 60% share in 2030 and the entire fleet in 2035.
Only in two states?
California and New York state would therefore be at the forefront of fleet electrification. But everywhere in the country, there is no rush to impose this type of technology on motorists. For the more conservative states in this area to decide to move on to the subject, a federal decision will no doubt be required. The notion of “hybrid car” remains to be defined: will non-rechargeable models be tolerated? What degree of electrification will be imposed? At the pace of market development, even in the United States most new vehicles will likely all have at least mild hybridization by the end of the decade …
