New York City Unveils Rat-Related Violation Map

NEW YORKNew York City Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in 2022 that “rats don’t rule this city, we do,” but a recently released map showing rodent-related violations shows it may be more close to a 50/50 split.

The color-coded, searchable map was unveiled Tuesday. It breaks down, building by building, which locations passed their last inspection, where there was recent rat activity, which locations failed for other reasons, and which locations have not been inspected in the last six months.

Users can search for an address or simply click on the map for results. Selecting a community district can also narrow down what the map shows. Once an address is selected, information from the Health Department will appear, showing when the last inspection was, what type of inspection it was, the result, and the number of inspections on the property since 2015.

The map shows the results of rat inspections in different neighborhoods in lower Manhattan, as well as parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Any place that hasn’t had an inspection in the last six months was grayed out on the map, but the history of inspections and actions is still available.

So which areas scored the best, and where did they have the most recent violations? It all depends on the neighborhoods you are looking at.

Much of Greenwich Village, the East Village, SoHo and the Lower East Side showed to have passed the latest inspection, according to the map, though there were some areas that did not. In Manhattan, the map doesn’t turn mostly pink (indicating rat activity at last inspection) until farther north on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side, and as far as Harlem.

There is also a mix in much of Upper Manhattan and in parts of the South Bronx.
