New York City Unveils Prototype of Groundbreaking Garbage Truck to Revolutionize Waste Collection

Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Thursday showed off the prototype of the new garbage truck that will be used in the city with automated side loading containers, which they assured is on its way to making of New York ‘the cleanest city in the United States’.

“The new garbage truck that we are introducing today, four years ahead of schedule, represents the future of New York City’s garbage collection,” the mayor said at the truck’s presentation.

“It means we will be able to contain trash from our large residential buildings, something people didn’t think was possible in our dense city. And thanks to that truck and our commitment to turning our streets from bad to clean, Residents of Manhattan Community Board 9 will be the first in the city to experience our streets free of all black bags,” added Adams.

“Under our administration, New York City’s streets are cleaner. And starting this fall, 70% of New York City’s black bags will be off our streets and into bins, but we won’t We will stop there.

“The new garbage truck that we presented today, four years ahead of schedule,” the mayor also wrote in a message on social networks with photos of the event.

In addition to the new trucks, the city will implement a new “data-driven containerization” strategy, essentially designating different classes of containers for different buildings.

“New Yorkers have been clear: They are tired of the black bags lining our sidewalks, the garbage juice oozing out of them, and being told that other cities around the world can have something we can’t,” said DSNY Commissioner Tisch. .

“This administration rejects the cynicism that says things can’t change, and the speed at which we have moved to change the relationship between 8.3 million New Yorkers and 44 million pounds of trash a day cannot be underestimated,” he added. the commissioner.

“This was our moon landing,” the DSNY wrote metaphorically in a message on social media, pointing out how huge the new garbage truck is for the department.

At the time, the city presented the so-called 2023 DSNY “Future of Trash” report, which found that this type of truck was necessary to service the stationary containers on the street that high-density buildings will be used to contain your garbage.

Industry experts, according to the city, estimated that development of this prototype truck would take up to five years.

Today there is talk that this truck – which according to the city has been built in record time – will allow substantially faster collection than manual collection.

The rapid development of this prototype, which took place in Turin, Italy, and both Hicksville and Brooklyn, New York, will be followed by significant testing and training, the city said.
