NEW YORK, April 29 (Reuters) – New York City plans to “fully reopen” on July 1 after more than a year of restrictions to control the spread of Covid-19 and after much of its 8 million residents have received a vaccine against the disease, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday.
“We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open their offices, theaters (…) to capacity,” the mayor of New York told American television station MSNBC.
Bill de Blasio justified his optimism by the success of the vaccination campaign in New York, where 6.3 million doses of vaccine were administered in the city of 8.3 million people.
“What we are seeing is that people have been vaccinated in extraordinary numbers,” he said. “We know that the vaccination effort will intensify and that we must continue to work hard on it.”
The New York mayor did not say whether people going to shows or dining inside restaurants would be subject to specific requirements, such as showing a vaccination certificate.
