NEW YORK — New York City will expand a curfew to more migrant shelters following violent incidents attributed to people in migrant shelters. Facts that have attracted national attention in recent weeks.
Mayor Eric Adams’ administration will impose an 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. check-in time at 20 migrant shelters starting Monday, after imposing initially restrictions in four other placesspokeswoman Kayla Mamelak said Sunday.
The curfew affects about 3,600 immigrants, and the largest emergency center houses almost 1,000 immigrants in Long Island City, Queens, according to a list provided by the mayor’s office.
City officials initially imposed a curfew on four shelters last month in response to complaints from neighbors.
Mamelak said the curfews are in line with restrictions already in place at traditional New York City homeless shelters and allow for “more efficient capacity management” of migrants in the city’s care. .
“New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both the asylum seekers in our care and New Yorkers living in the communities surrounding the shelters. that we administer,” he said in an emailed statement.
The additional curfews come after a wave of immigrant-related violence and crime has prompted increasingly dire rhetoric from city and law enforcement officials.
The total of 24 migrant shelters now subject to restrictions represent a fraction of the more than 200 such facilities the city operates to house some 66,000 newly arrived asylum seekers.
