New York City to Close 53 Streets for Earth Day Celebration – Full List of Closures

April 22 is Earth Day and our city wants to be part of that transformation to help the planet.

The Department of Transportation held a press conference on Tuesday to announce the annual celebration of Earth Day.

To commemorate that day, sections of 53 New York streets will be free of traffic throughout the day on April 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is an increase of 30 car-free streets compared to last year’s event, and closures will last an hour longer than in previous years.

Some officials say this year’s celebration will be the largest yet and they hope this isn’t just a one-day thing in the future.

“A day where we pay respect to Mother Earth…on a bicycle,” they commented.

Some areas where cars will be banned include Broadway Avenue in Manhattan from Union Square to Times Square, Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn between 40th and 45th Streets, and Woodside Avenue in Queens between 75th and 78th Streets.
