New York City Sues Charter Bus Companies for $708M to Cover Costs of Migrant Crisis

New York City is suing for $708 million of dollars to 17 transportation companies and charter buses to partially recover the costs of the immigration crisis due to the massive shipment of undocumented immigrants from the southern border in Texas, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams announced yesterday.

New York City has and always will do our part to manage this humanitarian crisis“But we cannot bear the costs of the state of Texas’ reckless political stratagems alone,” Adams said in a statement. “Today, we are taking legal action against 17 companies that have participated in the plan of the governor (Republican) of Texas (Greg) Abbott to transport tens of thousands of immigrants to New York City in an attempt to overwhelm our social services system.”

It is estimated that between April 2022 and December 2023, New York City spent approximately $3.5 billion dollars in housing and services for more than 164,500 people who passed through the NYC intake center. The immigration crisis has marked the two years of Adams’ administration, in the midst of a national political battle between democrats and republicans.

“According to the demand, all 17 charter bus companies knowingly implemented the plan of Abbott without taking into account the people they were transporting,” he said. Pix11.

The complaint alleges that bus and transportation companies have earned millions of dollars in revenue from the state of Texas transporting immigrants from the border to New York, Chicago, Washington DC and Philadelphia.

The New York mayor’s office also noted that companies may have violated a state social services law which states that any “person who knowingly brings or causes to be brought a needy person from out of state into this state for the purpose of making him or her a public charge…shall be obligated to transport such person out of the state or to maintain him or her on his or her own behalf.” own account.”

The Governor of New York, also a Democrat, Kathy Hochul, indicated that “it is time for the companies that facilitate their actions to take responsibility for their role in this ongoing crisis,” making it clear that they support the mayor’s initiative, the agency said. EFE.

In September, Mayor Adams declared that the massive arrival of immigrants will “destroy” the city. The situation has caused, in his own words, “Extremely painful” spending cuts that will affect millions of New Yorkers and hamper all city agencies by claiming the lack of resources from Joe Bien’s government.

Last month, the New York City teachers union (United Federation of Teachers, UFT) filed a lawsuit to block planned cuts to public schools announced by Mayor Adams to address the costs of the mass influx of immigrants. .
