New York City Subway Violence Spikes: Brazilian Tourist Stabbed in Neck, Mayor Promises Increased NYPD Presence

A Brazilian tourist was stabbed in the neck in a “random” mid-morning attack at the Queens Plaza station on the New York City Subway.

The incident occurred a week after a tourist from that same country was shot in the leg and police officers were targeted during a store robbery in Times Square.

Yesterday’s victim was a 29-year-old man who was stabbed around 10:30 a.m. Thursday while waiting on a platform at the station that serves the E, M and R trains, reported Daily News.

The injured man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said without releasing his name. No arrests have been announced.

In a similar case, on Monday a Mexican immigrant was shot dead waiting for the Subway at a station in the Bronx, also a random victim of a confrontation between gang members. NYPD announced an arrest yesterday and were still searching for two more suspects.

Assaults have increased on NYC’s public transportation system so far this year. As of Sunday, February 11, 64 attacks were reported on the Metro in 2024, compared to 58 recorded in the same period of 2023, an increase of 10%.

The number of robberies on the Metro has also increased: as of Sunday, 60 cases had been reported in 2024, a 5% increase compared to 57 in the same period in 2023, police data shows.

Since taking office in January 2022, the mayor Adams, ex NYPD, announced several times that the number of NYPD officers in the subway system would double in a reinforced security plan to confront violence in the chaotic NYC Subway. But the violence has continued.

Last month Richard Henderson (45) was fatally shot while intervening when he saw two other passengers arguing over playing music that was too loud at a Metro station in Brooklyn.
