With hundreds of migrants arriving daily, New York City will begin giving adult asylum seekers, including Mauritanians, 60 days notice to find another place to live, Mayor Eric Adams said.
Officials say they will work to try to connect migrants to other housing options, but if they cannot, migrants will have to wait wherever they can, perhaps even on the streets, until more accommodation spaces become available. Migrants will once again have to apply for accommodation.
The new town hall policy aims to make room for migrant families with children. Social workers will help migrants who are asked to leave to find housing and other services. Those who do not find alternative accommodation within 60 days will have to return to the reception center and reapply for placement.
This new policy will only affect adult men and women without children. In addition to this, a New York City team will also distribute pamphlets to migrants at the Mexico border who say there is no guarantee that New York City will be able to provide shelter once they arrive and that housing is very expensive.
“Please consider another city when deciding where to settle in the United States,” the brochure reads in English and Spanish.
Recall that New York City rented entire hotels to house migrants and also set up beds in schools and temporarily housed people in tents, a cruise terminal and a former police academy building.
