New York City: Schools have to close again due to rising corona numbers

In the face of rising corona numbers, the US east coast metropolis New York is closing its schools again. The city has exceeded the threshold of three percent positive corona tests and will therefore temporarily close the learning facilities from Thursday, wrote Mayor Bill de Blasio on Twitter.

New York had become the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States in the spring and had to close all schools in mid-March. Over the summer, the infection rate had stabilized again, but reopening had been postponed again and again. The first schools could not open again until the end of September. Recently, however, the situation had tightened again.

Just a week ago, the governor of the New York state of the same name, Andrew Cuomo, announced new measures:

  • Restaurants, bars and fitness studios must therefore close at 10 p.m.

  • Meetings in private homes are limited to a maximum of ten people.

Nationwide, the number of corona patients hospitalized with Covid-19 rose to more than 75,000 on Tuesday, setting a new record. The Midwest has become the new epicenter of the crisis in the United States, most recently reporting nearly half a million cases in a week.
