New York City schools begin to reopen in phases on December 7 – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Mayor Bill de Blasio reported Sunday during his press conference that New York City schools will begin reopening in phases for younger students.

In-person classes for 3-K, Pre-K and K-5 students can begin Monday, Dec. 7, the mayor said. Additionally, students in District 75 schools can return to classes in person beginning December 10.

The city is reopening schools in phases, in part, to ensure that improved resources for testing are available to returning students.

However, high school and middle school students will continue with remote classes for now, he added.

“We are working hard so that our schools reopen as soon as possible and today we announce that the schools for the youngest will reopen in phases and safely, we will continue working hard so that all our children are safe and receive education in person they deserve, “said the mayor.

The mayor estimates that 190,000 students enrolled in public schools will be eligible to return the week of December 7. In order for students to return to classes in person, they must be tested for COVID-19 and require filling out a testing consent form or have an exception from a doctor. Families can fill out the test form on this website.

When schools reopen, weekly coronavirus tests will be in effect for students and teachers.

The city is reopening schools “because now we have a lot of proof of how safe schools can be,” de Blasio said Sunday. “We are confident that we can keep the schools safe.”

School buildings that return to in-person learning, whenever possible, will transition to classroom instruction five days a week, the mayor said.

Schools in New York City’s Orange Zone will open following State guidance.

New York City Department of Education Chancellor Richard A. Carranza said reopening classes in person is important and the team insists that “we must all do our part to keep schools open.”

School buildings in New York City have been closed to in-person learning since November 19 due to the city’s 3% positivity rate.

The mayor also announced Sunday that 130 patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 and reported 1,636 new positive cases.

This is an unfolding story.
