The last country music radio station in New York no longer exists.
Audacy Inc. has converted WNSH-FM 94.7 under the brand name “The Block”. He’s described as New York’s # 1 for flashbacks – music from the early ’90s to the Hot 97s. “From the Apollo Theater to Lincoln Center, everyone listens,” says a one-liner promotional for the radio station.
The Block will feature songs and artists that are synonymous with iconic New York City hip-hop culture and that still resonate strongly with today’s listeners of all generations, ”said Chris Oliviero, senior vice president and market manager for Audacy in New York.
“It was an opportunity to add quintessential New York sound to our audio portfolio that was lacking in the region, while continuing to engage with our New York country audiences via HD and digital platforms,” adds Oliviero.
Audacy made similar changes across the country in Chicago and San Francisco. WBMX-FM ‘104.3 Jams’ is now in its fourth year of delivering success back to the Windy City. Just a week ago, San Francisco’s KITS-FM switched to Adult Hits, bidding farewell to the alternate format after 35 years.
Listeners of the old ‘Country 94.7’ format can continue to listen on WNSH HD2. However, on-air personalities are no longer available for listening. WNSH was a country radio station since January 2013, enjoying format exclusivity among NYC FM stations. Nashville music fans living in the city have welcomed the station – but it has lost its luster over the past 24 months.
New York suburbs still have WKMK-FM ‘Thunder 106’ for listening to country music. It is also the first musical station classified on its market.
