Everyone agrees that the founders of Uber had a genius idea when creating the app. A trip with a private driver in a few finger swipes on a smartphone while knowing in advance the price of the trip, enough to revolutionize the transport industry.
In order to further satisfy its customers, especially New Yorkers, Uber has made an agreement that will allow them to hail the famous yellow taxis through the application. So instead of a VTC (transport vehicle with driver), the user will have a taxi at his disposal. It will be available from this spring.
Why such a decision on the part of Uber?
Taxi drivers have struggled with the setbacks of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the number of taxis in the city has not particularly changed while that of VTC has experienced a real increase, while the license of the first has been obtained at an exorbitant price.
Uber and New York City’s iconic yellow vehicles are competitors. However, the San Francisco giant got wind of the great opportunity that the unblocked markets with taxis would represent. That’s why he found common ground with them. Both sides will both be winners.
How will this new partnership go?
The fares for a trip aboard taxis booked via the platform show almost no difference with those of the basic formula offered by Uber. The distinction with the normal ride inside the taxis is only that instead of the invoice given by the meter, the passenger will know in advance the costs of his trip. On top of that, the 14,000 taxi drivers in New York City will be able to accept estimated fare prices or not. In this sense, they will use applications like Curb or Arro.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance has nevertheless expressed some reservations about the system that the transport giant plans to put in place. Broadly, he said taxi drivers in New York would be at a roughly 15% disadvantage when comparing metered fares and those offered by rides through the platform.
