New York City Reduces Stay in Immigrant Shelters to 30 Days, Leaving Asylum Seekers in a Difficult Position

Only 30 days. That is how long men alone or without family members will be able to stay in the immigrant shelters that are still active in New York City.

The deadline announced by Mayor Eric Adams, which is reduced from 60 to 30 days, has been a bucket of cold water for thousands of asylum seekers. In fact, the local authority indicated that the measure is to relieve the shelter system, given the arrival of some 116,000 immigrants to the Big Apple.

“It puts us between a rock and a hard place. It’s a little difficult,” an immigrant of Venezuelan origin told Univision 41.

“30 days is not enough,” says an activist

For her part, activist Natalia Aristizabal, deputy director of the organization “Se Camino NY”, stated that Mayor Eric Adams’ measure “is to intimidate people” and with a “lack of humanity.”

“30 days is not enough to find work or accommodation,” he said.

Governor Kathy Hochul asked the President that this extension also apply to immigrants of other nationalities, such as Ecuadorian and Colombian.

Upon expiration of the 30-day period, immigrants will be able to reapply.

“We appreciate the support we have received so far from the state and the federation, but with more than 60,000 asylum seekers still in our care and without additional help, we have been forced to make difficult decisions,” Adams said.

The City reported that over the past two months they have distributed about 13,000 60-day notices to unaccompanied immigrants.

In total, there are about 60,000 immigrants in New York’s shelter system.

They added that once they are out of the system they will be able to reapply if they still do not have a stable place to live.

“They cut off our card so they know that you can no longer enter, we have to go to 45th Street to register again to see where they will place us,” commented one of the immigrants, whose deadline expired.

“We don’t have money, we don’t have work, how do we pay the rent, it’s very expensive here,” he added.

The City estimates that between 300 and 500 immigrants arrive daily.
