In a recent analysis of more than 180 cities, New York, known worldwide for its culinary diversity, was surprisingly left out of the gastronomic top 10, coming in at number 20. While Orlando, famous for its numerous theme parks, has conquered the palates of lovers of good food and has been crowned the number one “foodie city” in the United States, according to a new ranking by the financial website WalletHub.

The study, which considered 28 key aspects of “foodie friendliness,” including factors such as affordability of high-quality food, accessibility and diversity of cuisine, featured several unexpected positions on its culinary elite list.
As the list continues, the favorites come from the West Coast with Portland, Sacramento, Miami and San Francisco occupying prominent positions. Florida was the only state to represent the East Coast in the top 10, with Tampa being its third entry on the list at No. 6. Following on the list are San Diego, Las Vegas, Austin and Seattle.

While California and Florida dominated the Top 10 with three cities each, WalletHub’s analysis also shed light on the performance of other major cities and their surrounding areas. In the New York metropolitan area, Jersey City, known for being home to the famous Razza pizzeria, ranked at number 58, with Newark and Yonkers at 61 and 144, respectively.

Philadelphia, home of the famous cheesesteak, flew to No. 34, while the land of deep dish pizza, Chicago, landed at No. 14. At the back of the list, Pearl City in Hawaii took the last spot at No. 182.

The city of Orlando, while ranking 108th in affordability, stood out for its diversity, accessibility and quality, ranking third in these categories. Interestingly, Laredo, Texas, was named the most affordable foodie city, ranking 102nd overall. When it comes to diversity, accessibility and quality of gastronomy, Miami emerged as the number one city, while San Francisco was hot on its heels in second place.
