New York City Prepares to Enroll Over 19,000 Immigrant Children in Public Schools

New York City is getting ready to enroll more than 19,000 immigrant children in public schools this coming school year.

The challenge will force the authorities to divert resources from other programs to deal with this emergency.

David Banks, in charge of the City schools, reported that some schools that are close to the hotels where the immigrants stay are running out of available spaces.

“There have been some schools where they have received more than their fair share.”

“They have more students than others. Part of that is due to the location of temporary housing, so in those locations we’ve worked very hard to try to mitigate that.”

Even so, he assured that they will give space to everyone.

“Regardless of where they come from or the language they speak, we will receive them all,” he said.

The city reported that it has about 1,700 teachers within the system who can speak Spanish.
