New York City Officials Introduce Shark Monitoring Marches at Beaches

New York City officials announced today, Wednesday, the arrival of marches to monitor the city’s beaches in search of sharks, in response to the first shark attack in 70 years on Rockaway Beach, near JFK International Airport in New York. The aftermath of a horrific attack that took place the day before yesterday, Monday, on a 65-year-old woman.

New York Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeiffer said the marchers would fly over Rockaway Beach in Queens, Coney Island in Brooklyn and Orchard Beach in the Bronx. “We’re working together with the Parks Department and the New York Police Department to make this a safe place to swim,” he said. “We’re using technology to save lives.” Pfeiffer said on Tuesday that a shark sighting had been reported at Rockaway Beach, but the beach was already closed to swimming after Monday’s attack. Which led to the transfer of the victim, Tatyana Koltonyuk, to the hospital after a predator bit her leg about 50 feet from the shore.

“Every morning before the beaches open, we’ll march and have the fire department and police boats check the water… and during that time, if we spot a shark, we’ll make a decision to close the beach,” Pfeiffer added.
