New York City Offers Free Tickets to Immigrants for Relocation: Concerns and New Measures

New York City pushed a proposal to offer free tickets to immigrants who plan to move to another state or even those who want to leave the country.

From the Lower East Side, in Manhattan, the Brigid School, on 185th Street, was designated as the ticket distribution point.

However, some immigrants assure that their legalization process is ongoing and they fear losing it with an impromptu move to another state.

Nearly 130,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City since 2022, according to mayoral figures. Likewise, about 65 thousand are kept in shelters distributed in the Big Apple.

Immigrants with children can only stay in shelters for 60 days

Immigrant families with children who are in New York City, housed in one of the 200 active shelters, will have a period of 60 days to leave the shelter and look for alternative housing.

The new measure was announced by Mayor Eric Adams, through a press release. From now on, they will notify each family to indicate their limit of stay in the shelter.

They also indicated that immigrants from the nuclear family will receive points of contact with social workers during those 60 days, so that they can plan their near future. The mayor’s office called this benefit: “intensified social work services.”

“The policies that we are going to apply seek to put a limit so that people stay. This cannot be permanent,” he explained.

The local authority also noted: “We must allow people to get on with their lives or find a level of sustainability for themselves.”

“Every time we receive more than 10,000 immigrants, more arrive than leave, which is not sustainable,” he said.
