The mayor’s government Eric Adams seeks to suspend an obligation of more than 80 years of New York City to provide shelter to anyone who requests it, including undocumented immigrants.
Last week, the New York City Mayor’s Office formally asked the New York Supreme Court to suspend the Callahan Decree, which would allow the city to set aside a legal obligation to provide shelter to single adults.
“More than 122,700 asylum seekers have passed through our intake system since spring 2022 and projected costs of more than $12 billion over three years, it is abundantly clear that the status quo cannot continue,” Adams said in a statement.
The letter sent to Judge Erika Edwards of the New York Supreme Court asks for the suspension of the 1981 decree, which requires the city to provide housing.
They even ask to suspend the rules every time the governor or mayor declares a state of emergency and there is an influx of people seeking shelter.
The city government of New York would only provide shelter to immigrant familiesnot to single people.
Civil organizations united against the request to suspend the refuge obligation.
“This is the city’s most significant and damaging attempt to roll back its legal and moral obligation to provide safe and decent shelter to the homeless since that right was established 42 years ago,” several groups in the group said. the Legal Aid Society.
Mayor Adams’ actions against immigrants were added to the request of his advisor Ingrid Lewis-Martin, who a few days ago recently asked President Joe Biden’s government to “close the borders,” although the mayor does not agree with that position.
There is no decision yet, but Christine Quinn, former City Council president and executive director of WIN, a network of shelters for women and children, said any housing restriction changes would also affect families.
Adams traveled to Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia to try to send the message that New York does not have unlimited resources for immigrants or ensure housing or jobs.
“I’m not going to be in a five-star hotel, like a lot of people have told us… If that can resonate and start that conversation there, I’ll try it,” Adamas said before leaving.
The mayor has said that there must be a humanitarian vision on immigrationas part of the visit to the aforementioned countries, but it is not clear if he maintains his position of stopping offering refuge to non-citizens.
