The decision in June 2022 by the United States Supreme Court to overturn the Wade v. Roe, in effect since 1973, deprived millions of women in the United States of the right to access abortion services.
This Monday, to strengthen New York City’s commitment to protecting reproductive rights, Mayor Eric Adams released the Bill of Sexual and Reproductive Rights, which will help ensure that all patients in New York City are protected of discrimination and harassment related to your sexual rights and reproductive health care decisions, will be distributed to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s network of health care providers, advocacy groups, and partner organizations ( DOHMH) to share with patients.
In her presentation, Adams recalled how after the Supreme Court stripped women of the right to control their own bodies, cities and states across the country have worked tirelessly to completely limit access to abortion.
“While much of the country continues its attacks on abortion care, we will never allow this right to be eliminated here in New York City,” said the municipal executive. “We issued a Sexual and Reproductive Health Bill of Rights to do everything in our power to ensure that abortion and reproductive health care continue to be available to residents and visitors alike. “This is about protecting women’s elections and freedoms.”
Since Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the United States Supreme Court struck down the federal right to access safe, legal abortion services nationwide, New York City has introduced a range of services to protect and fulfill the local right to access abortion care.
