New York City Mayor Creates Advisory Council to Improve Jewish Life in Face of Rising Anti-Semitism – Latest News Updates

NEW YORKNew York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday the creation of the city’s first advisory council, made up of Jewish community leaders, with the goal of improving Jewish life in the five boroughs, in the face of the rising anti-Semitism and other challenges.

The Jewish Advisory Council will be made up of 37 representatives from various Jewish communities and organizations and will meet regularly to discuss issues affecting New York’s Jews, the mayor’s office said.

The council will be chaired by a senior adviser to Adams, Joel Eisdorfer.

“Our Jewish community, which is the largest in the world outside of Israel, is a vital part of New York City,” Adams said. “As anti-Semitic crimes increase across the country, our new Jewish Advisory Council will ensure that Jewish New Yorkers from all communities are represented and have access to the support and resources the city offers.”

The list of council members includes representatives from Jewish groups, including the UJA-Federation of New York, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, the New York Board of Rabbis and the Met Council.

Other board members are representatives of non-profit organizations, community organizations and religious groups. Many of its members come from Orthodox communities.

The council will focus on public safety, quality of life, education and other issues, the mayor’s office said.

Adams has had close ties to New York’s Jewish communities since his days as a Brooklyn senator and Brooklyn borough president. Some of his main collaborators are also Jewish.

New York City has over one million Jews, the largest Jewish population of any municipality in the world.

Jews are the target of more hate crimes than any other minority in New York, with at least 100 incidents reported to police so far this year, amid rising anti-Semitism nationwide.
