The most important contest at the local level is to elect the mayor of the city.
There are 13 Democrats and two Republicans who are seeking to become the successor to Bill de Blasio, who cannot run for a third term due to term limits.
Here we tell you a little more about the main applicants.
On the side of the Democrats are Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President, who currently tops the voters’ preference. Adams was elected to his current position in 2013, he was also a state senator and served in the Police Department for 22 years.
Kathryn García, who served until last year as Commissioner of the city’s Cleaning Department. She was previously a commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection.
Andrew Yang, who became known for his campaign for the presidency in last year’s elections. Although he is a lawyer, he is known for founding several startups, including Manhattan Prep.
Maya Wiley, serves as Senior Vice President of The New School. She is a lawyer by profession and from 2012 to 2014 she served as a counselor to Mayor de Blasio.
Dianne Morales, has served as executive director of organizations such as Phipps Neighborhoods and The Door.
Shaun Donovan, was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Obama administration.
Scott Stringer, current comptroller of the city of New York.
On the Republican side, only two candidates are running for mayor.
Is about Fernando Mateo, a Latino businessman known for his work as president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers and representative of the Wineries Association of America.
