The mayor partly blames the arrival of new immigrants to New York City for forcing city agencies to cut their budgets, due hundreds of millions of dollars since the crisis began.
Adams asks agencies to reduce their budget by 4% for 2024 and future years.
The latest round of cuts comes a day after City Council rejected the mayor’s nearly $103 billion budget because it fails to invest in key programs for New Yorkers and the most vulnerable.
It must be borne in mind that we are talking about the police, the homeless, public transport, vehicle safety, health, etc.
The two exceptions, the city department of education and CUNY, which will be subject to a 3% cut to minimize disruption to schools
According to the mayor’s office and only the heads of the agencies, they have received instructions to avoid layoffs and a significant impact on services.
Where possible the city faces various financial hurdles including the ongoing immigration crisis and having to negotiate new contracts with nearly all of the city’s unions.
The pending state budget outcome may also require the city to shoulder significant costs, from MTA funding to Medicaid.
Ultimately, the uncertainty in Albany stems from the city facing a $6 billion budget deficit by 2027.
