New York City will reopen at full capacity starting July 1, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday.
“Our plan is to fully reopen on July 1. We’re ready to open stores, open businesses, offices, theaters, at full speed, ”de Blasio said on MSNBC’s“ Morning Joe ”.
Restaurants, gymnasiums, boutiques, hair salons and arenas will open at full capacity. Meanwhile, smaller theaters could reopen over the summer and Broadway is on track to open by September. Schools will be back at “full power” in the fall.
This is the first time that the city will reopen completely in over a year. New York City first closed in March 2020 when it became the original epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States
“What we are seeing is that people have been getting vaccinated in extraordinary numbers,” said de Blasio.
New York City administered more than 6 million doses of the Covid vaccine on Wednesday, with around 36% of the city’s adult population fully vaccinated, according to city data. More than half of the city’s adult population has received at least one dose of a vaccine.
“It will be the summer of New York,” said the mayor. “I think people are going to flock to New York because they want to come back to life. “
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the state would lift statewide curfews and ban bar seats in the city from May. Bar seating will be permitted in New York City starting May 3, while curfews for midnight al fresco dining will end on May 17. Meanwhile, indoor dining curfews will expire on May 31.
