New York City: Mayor Bill de Blasio announces police reform

After days of protests against racism and police brutality, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio presented proposals for reforming the police force in the metropolis. For example, part of the budget of the New York Police Department (NYPD) should be used for youth and social work, the Democrat said at a press conference on Sunday. Citizens are also to be settled directly in the NYPD as ambassadors. “You will see and feel changes. I promise,” said de Blasio, who has been the city’s mayor since 2014.

In addition, the handling of disciplinary files by police officers should be made more transparent. These are only the first steps, the details still have to be worked out, said de Blasio. “This is a moment of transformation.”

After the death of the African American George Floyd, thousands of people have been demonstrating largely peacefully against racism and for justice for Floyd for days in New York and across the country. A reform of the NYPD is also one of the demands of the demonstrators in New York.
