New York City Mayor Announces Plan to House Migrants on Randalls Island

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan Monday to house up to 2,000 migrants on an island in the East River, where a migrant housing center had been set up last year that it was dismantled weeks later.

The state will reimburse the city for the operating expenses of an adult migrant camp on Randalls Island, Adams said.

“As the number of asylum seekers in our care continues to grow by the hundreds daily, pushing our system to its breaking point and beyond, finding enough beds each night has become more and more of a daunting task,” he said. Adams in a press release.

“We are grateful to Governor (Kathy) Hochul and the State of New York for helping to open this new relief center and covering the costs, and we need more of the same from all levels of government. ”said Adams, who has repeatedly called on the federal government to provide more financial support to efforts to welcome migrants in New York City.

The city has rented hotels to house migrants and has housed people in places like a cruise terminal and a former police academy after tens of thousands of asylum seekers have poured into the city in the past year.

More than 57,200 asylum seekers are currently in city care, Adams said.

City officials last month announced a plan to house 1,000 migrants in the parking lot of a state psychiatric hospital in the borough of Queens.

Last week, city officials began sending migrants to recreation centers at two Brooklyn parks: McCarren and Sunset.

Officials set up a center for migrant accommodation in October last year on Randalls Island, in the East River, between the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx, but three weeks later they announced that they would close the complex of tents due to the decrease in the number of people who were transferred by bus from the southern border of the United States.
