New York –
New history was recorded in New York, United States of America (US). Now, mosques in New York no longer need to apply for a permit to recite call to prayer on a certain day.
Reported Associated Press and CNN, Friday (1/9/2023), New York City Mayor Eric Adams allowed the call to prayer to be echoed freely by local mosques without special permission as before. However, the latest provisions will only apply during Friday prayers and during the holy month of Ramadan.
Adams, in his statement on Tuesday (29/8) local time, said that the latest regulation would foster a spirit of inclusivity. Adams said local mosques in New York City would not need special permission to call the call to prayer every Friday or at sunset, at Maghrib, during Ramadan.
The New York City Police Department’s public affairs bureau, said Adams, will work with local mosque managers to communicate the latest regulations. He made sure the device used to broadcast the call to prayer was set to the appropriate decibel level.
The New York government stipulates that places of worship can broadcast on loudspeakers up to 10 decibels above the ambient noise level.
“For too long, there has been a feeling that our society is not allowed to speak out call to prayer,” said Adams, who was accompanied by local Muslim leaders in a press conference at New York City Hall.
Adams said he was cutting red tape by declaring mosques could call out the call to prayer on Fridays and evenings in Ramadan. He emphasized that all citizens have the right to practice their respective beliefs in New York.
“Today, we cut the red tape and state clearly that mosques and houses of worship are free to call the call to prayer on Fridays and during Ramadan without requiring a permit,” he stressed.
“You are free to live your faith in New York City,” Adams continued.
For information, echoing the call to prayer with loudspeakers is common in mosques in Muslim-majority countries. However, the call to prayer is rarely heard in the US
The Minneapolis city authority made headlines last year when it allowed local mosques to broadcast the call to prayer publicly. Adams who is a politician of the US Democratic Party forged close ties with leaders of various religions and beliefs and is known to have promoted the role of religion in public life.
