New York City Marathon canceled – magazine

New York canceled

New York was always very popular in and of itself in pre-Corona times. But now the long run through the city that never sleeps has been canceled. For 2020 at least, one is clearly hoping that the marathon can take place in 2021.

The starting shot would have been given on November 1, 2020 – again for a little more than 50,000 participants from all over the world.

And that was definitely one of the reasons why the running organizers have now taken this step – with a heavy heart, but nevertheless;

  • firstly, nobody knows what the corona situation will be like in autumn;
  • secondly, nobody knows what the travel situation will be like in the whole world;
  • Thirdly, New York has just recovered, the 8 million metropolis was one of the centers of the pandemic, meanwhile the New York fight against corona is, so to speak, an American success story in this matter.

This is only the second cancellation since the “original run” that took place in 1970. In 2012, one week before the planned marathon start, hurricane “Sandy” swept across the country and devastated what it could only devastate. A remarkable detail on the side: even 9/11 could not stop the running of the two months later run in 2001.

In 2020 the NYCM will definitely not exist.

The stories that play out over the last few kilometers in Central Park are legendary. The Kenyan Mary Keitany with her four victories so far. Half-marathon world record holder Geoffrey Kamworor, who so far has twice managed to cross the finish line at the Tavern on the Green first. Ex-marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe did the feat three times. However, the nine (in numbers “9” !!!) victories of the Norwegian Grete Waitz will remain unforgettable until (hopefully) forever. The record winner of New York, who has unfortunately since passed away, is not only considered a sports legend in Norway, her run from 1992, when she accompanied Fred Lebow, the race director with cancer at the time, at the marathon (his first participation in his own run) is unforgettable.

Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai has held the men’s course record since 2011 (2:05:06). Margaret Okayo has claimed the women’s record since 2003 (2:22:31). At these times you can easily see that the New York route is anything but easy, uphill, downhill, not least in the last section in Central Park; Real dramas often take place there and not only in the very front section of the marathon field.

The organizers of the NYCM want to notify the participants by July 15th that the run will not take place this year. Well, you can (or must) read it in numerous media anyway. From July 15th the entry fees will be returned. Well, what can you say about that? Nothing, it is and remains a strange year (hopefully ONE) that will not only go down in the sports history books, but will probably be more than a side note in all histories – let’s make the best of it and just keep training … and let’s hope that in 2021 not only the “majors” of this world, but all races will take place again.
