The 2020 New York City Marathon was officially canceled today.
The largest marathon in the world cannot take place on November 1st this year. The event would have celebrated the 50th anniversary this year, after which the New York Marathon was first held in 1970.
It is the second cancellation in the history of the NYC Marathon. In 2012, the event was canceled at short notice due to Hurricane Sandy.
Statement from the organizer
The 2020 NYC Marathon, which was supposed to take place on November 1st, has been canceled. Due to coronavirus-related health and safety concerns among runners, spectators, volunteers, staff, and the many partners and communities supporting the event, we worked with the New York City Mayor’s Office to make the tough decision to cancel the world’s largest marathon .
Options for already registered runners
All participants who have registered for the TCS New York City Marathon 2020 will be contacted directly by July 15 regarding possible solutions to the cancellation. You can choose between one of the following five solution options:
- A full refund of your entry fee
- Guaranteed free participation for the 2021 marathon
- Guaranteed free participation for the 2022 marathon
- Guaranteed free participation for the 2023 marathon
- Donate the value of your registration fee to support NYRR’s free youth and community programs
Runners who received their entry through a charity, partner, or international tour operator should contact that organization starting July 1 to learn about the solutions available to them.

Registered runners and other runners from around the world are invited to take part in the third annual TCS New York City Marathon – Virtual 26.2M, which runs from October 17th to November 1st. More details about the virtual marathon will be announced in July.

The date for the next New York City Marathon has already been set. This should take place on November 7, 2021.
