New York City has announced a big change for taxis and VTC by 2030. Indeed, all these services will have to have a fleet of electric cars.
The mayor of New York has reached an agreement with the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). The latter’s curator, David Do, announced the ‘Green Rides’ program alongside Eric Adams.
This plan incorporates two main points about taxis and VTC. The first is their obligation, also in 2030, to be accessible to people with reduced mobility.
The other point will therefore be the obligation to switch the fleets to electric, normally without too much expense. Indeed, the federal bonuses and those specific to the State should make it possible to equalize the prices of electric and thermal cars in 2027.
The Green Rides plan will begin next year. From the outset, New York wants 5% of the most in-demand trips, including those of Uber and Lyft, to be supported by electric cars or accessible to people with reduced mobility.
This share will rise to 15% in 2025 and 25% in 2026. Thereafter, the proportion will grow by 20 points per year, reaching 100% in 2030. Uber and Lyft, although independent of the city, have signed this plan. The two American personal transport giants represent 78,000 cars in New York.
