New York City Lifeguards to Receive Wage Increase and Bonus

NEW YORK — This is good news for those who work as lifeguards at New York City pools and beaches during the summer season.

This is because the wage rates for new and second-year season lifeguards will be increased to approximately $21.26. Additionally, all lifeguards working through mid-August are now eligible for a $1,000 bonus.

These changes come as the city’s Parks Department has reached an agreement with the DC37 union for the pay increase, Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue announced.

In addition, the Parks Department will once again offer a wading pool-specific lifeguard certification for staff covering only wading pools, making it more affordable for New Yorkers to secure a job as a lifeguard.

“Our public pools and beaches offer New Yorkers a safe place to exercise, beat the heat and make the most of their summers,” said New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “The well-being of our swimmers is our number one priority, and lifeguards are essential to creating safe environments that all New Yorkers can enjoy. As we continue to build our lifeguard corps, we are committed to supporting these critical personnel who put at risk their own safety to save lives and make summer a reality for millions of New Yorkers.

Qualification exams for new lifeguards were held starting in December 2022 and ending in March 2023.

However, New Yorkers who worked as a lifeguard in the summer of 2022 can enroll in recertification with the New York City Parks Lifeguard School so they can serve again this summer.
