New York City – when a man suddenly puts on a gas mask on the subway in the morning rush hour, sets off a smoke bomb and finally shoots around so wildly that there is mass panic, it is not good publicity for the mega-metropolis on the Hudson River. Especially when deadly rail banging and other attacks have been making headlines for a while. Despite the impression of an increase in crime, the big city is much safer than it was about 30 years ago, when things were really bad.
