New York City – when a man suddenly puts on a gas mask in the subway in the morning rush hour, detonates a smoke bomb and finally shoots around so wildly that there is mass panic, that’s not good advertising for the mega-metropolis on the Hudson river. Especially when deadly track shoving and other attacks have been making headlines for a while. Despite the impression of increasing crime, the big city is far safer than it was about 30 years ago, when things were really rough.
