New York City Introduces Autonomous Robot for Police Patrols in Subway

The City of New York announced in September 2023 the arrival of a new team member, a robot, for police officers. The Knightscope K5 will be trained and configured to ensure regular patrols between midnight and 6 a.m. on the metro.

New York City announces the deployment of a new fully autonomous robot, intended to ensure safety in subway corridors. This experiment follows the integration of other robotic solutions within the law enforcement agencies of the American metropolis.

For two weeks, the Knightscope K5 will be trained and configured by the New York police (NYPD), before carrying out regular patrols between midnight and 6:00 a.m.

It was the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, who himself presented the robot to the press. For him, the use of this type of robot only has advantages: they are durable, cost less than police officers and are respectful of privacy.

The robot moves at the same pace as a human

Measuring nearly 1.60 m high, the robot moves at the same speed as a human, not exceeding 5 km/h. It is possible to indicate a precise route, which it can easily follow thanks to its integrated cameras and sensors.

From then on, he will be able to “patrol” any predefined area. It will be able to go to its charging station on its own if necessary and then leave on a mission once its batteries are full again.

Eric Adams explained that the robot has a button that allows you to connect an officer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In the future, other Knightscope K5s may be deployed in various confined areas, whether parks, campuses or various businesses. It has also already proven itself in Los Angeles, where it has patrolled certain neighborhoods since 2022.

In any case, we are still far from the universe of RoboCop, where a humanoid ruled the roost in the streets of Detroit.

Many robots in creation

Note that the New York police want to be at the cutting edge of technology. Last spring, it presented a whole battery of robots intended to help its agents on a daily basis, in very specific missions.

In addition to the Knightscope K5, there is Digidog, a variation of the famous four-legged robot Spot from Boston Dynamics or the Guardian HX from StarChase, a portable launcher capable of sending GPS beacons to any vehicle, even in movement, so as not to lose track.
