Anyone who wants to drive through the southern part of Manhattan in New York must pay a fee of 15 dollars (14 euros). With this measure, the city council wants to combat the large population.
It was already known that the tax would be introduced, but now the start date has been decided. Starting June 30, drivers will pay a toll for driving in the area south of 60th Street. This is in addition to the tolls already levied on bridges and tunnels leading to Manhattan Island.
The fee applies to almost the entire area south of Central Park. The main attractions, such as the Empire State Building, Times Square and the 9/11 memorial, are in that area.
Different levels
Larger vehicles pay more than the standard rate of $15. For example, buses with tourists have to pay 36 dollars (about 34 euros) to drive there. Motorcycles actually pay less, and there is a lower rate at night too. Taxi passengers pay a toll on top of the toll.
People with low incomes can apply for a discount. Emergency vehicles, school buses, and disabled transportation do not have to pay fees.
The measure should generate $1 billion annually for the city of New York. This will be invested in public transport.
