“New York City Implements Mandatory Separation of Organic Waste for Composting Initiative”

The city is expected to announce today that it will begin requiring residents to separate their leaf debris and other organic-type material such as those collected from yards from other trash.

With the measure, the administration of Mayor Adams seeks that this compostable material be collected as it is done with bottles, cans and cardboard.

The rule will go into effect on June 30, but counties will adopt it according to a set schedule.

New York once offered a similar program to certain neighborhoods in all five boroughs, but it was removed at the height of the pandemic.

The compost collection service has restarted in Queens and will roll out to Brooklyn in October.

Municipal authorities will implement the program citywide by October 2024, the largest of its kind in the country.

Residents who fail to separate their sheets would be fined $50 for the first offense.
