The building located at 715 Marlborough Avenue suffered a strong blow with heavy machinery, from the neighboring building, where a company operates.
After the incident, which occurred last Thursday, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOT) issued a statement indicating that the structure is at risk of collapsing.
Now, the Hispanic families who resided in the property have been evicted for security reasons, leaving them adrift, homeless.
“I have my animals, I have a 13-year-old son, I can’t stay on the street,” Irma Pérez expressed to Univision 41.
Hispanics from the damaged building allege that the eviction notice was very sudden
Aside from living in conditions they consider deplorable, with cracks, dirt and water leaks, residents are also upset by the surprise eviction.
They point out that they received the notice just a few hours before the evacuation order was issued. Although they understand that it is to preserve their lives, they feel that there was no order in the protocol.
The Department of Buildings document indicated the following:
- Danger of structural failure
- The building is out of balance and leaning to the east
- It presents structural cracks that indicate displacement
- Columns out of balance and signs of structural failure
Irma Pérez was one of the residents who experienced the impact most closely, even when she was sleeping. “It sounded like something fell, it was loud, ugly, and then (the building) moved,” she said at the moment the heavy machinery hit the structure.
Hispanic families want to ask the owner for deposit money, which by rental contract they must leave when renting a property. This is with the objective of looking for housing, since some do not guarantee that they will return to the same building.
The Red Cross has also given accommodation for three days, in hotels, to some of the residents who have nowhere else to go, but the majority do not know what to do when that short period is up.
