New York City Hall Tightens Rules for Airbnb Apartment Rentals in 2023

Did you dream of biting into the big apple? From visiting the Statue of Liberty and strolling down 5th Avenue with your arms full of packages… And you had considered a small rental while trying to find an apartment on Airbnb?

Well know that New York apartment rental is strictly supervised. And New York City Hall has once again tightened the rules governing the rental of short-term apartments in the city, as explained by the specialized site CNewYork.

These new provisions concern all Airbnb-type platforms in New York in the United States.

As of January 9, 2023, property owners will have to bring proof that the rented apartment is their main residence. They will also have to demonstrate to specialized platforms that they do indeed live in the rented apartment and that they didn’t book a room with a dedicated door for travellers.

A plan of the house will be requested.

Owners who cannot prove that the vacation rental is their principal residence incur a $5,000 fine. As for platforms that do not verify that the owners live in the property being rented, they could be fined $1,500.
