It’s a funny way to enforce containment. In New York, the town hall has just launched a platform that allows … to denounce people violating the social distancing measures put in place, while this state passed the milestone of 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus on Monday.
“As the city has enacted social distancing restrictions to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, you can report a violation in progress,” the official website read. Businesses opened for no reason, safety distances not respected, team sports, or group gatherings are particularly targeted. On the platform, just specify the place and duration to report the “social distancing violation” that citizens spot.

At the same time, New Yorkers also have the opportunity to denounce “non-essential construction”, while “all non-essential construction and demolition work is suspended until further notice”, details the city.
Montreal is implementing the same system
New York is not the only city to implement such a system. In Canada, the site of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) has also been offering, since the end of last week, to “report online” “situations that violate instructions and government directives related to the Covid- 19 “. As examples, the SPVM cites a “party inside a home with people who do not live there”, a football game in a park or “a food store that does not respect the rules of prescribed hygiene “.
