NEW YORKNew York City has received more than 150,000 migrants since April of last year, a spokeswoman for Mayor Eric Adams confirmed to EFE.

The wave, mostly Venezuelans (although in recent months many young people have arrived from Africa) has been constant, with between 2,000 and up to 3,000 people arriving in a single week.

The city is currently caring for 67,600 of the migrants, providing them with shelter, meals and other services.

According to the mayor, the situation has caused a fiscal crisis that will lead him to spend 12 billion dollars (a little more than 11 billion euros) from the treasury by 2025, which is why he has ordered spending cuts.

In total, according to City Hall data, the city has more than 122,500 people under its care, which includes newcomers and homeless New Yorkers, since a 42-year-old court order requires New York to provide shelter to anyone who requests it.

This led the city to have to rent hotels as shelters, erect tents and locate them in other locations. In total, according to the mayor’s spokesperson, as of Friday the authorities have 214 places to house migrants, including 18 humanitarian aid centers.

The first groups of people arrived from Texas, sent by Republican Governor Greg Abbott to Democratic states in response to the immigration policy of the Administration of US President Joe Biden.

Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, also joined Abbott’s initiative.

Many other migrants have arrived on their own, which is attributed to the court’s right to shelter order, which the mayor has asked be rescinded while the fiscal crisis continues, which is currently being disputed in federal court. .

Adams and the governor of the state of New York, Democrat Kathy Hochul, have asked Biden for economic help to confront the city’s fiscal crisis, which so far has not happened.

The mayor has asked municipal agencies to submit to a spending-cutting plan, which has been widely criticized by activists.
