New York City Fire Department Tests Aerial Maritime Rescue Drones to Enhance Water Safety

The New York City Fire Department is testing new aerial maritime rescue devices.

These are drones equipped with floats that inflate automatically when dropped into the water next to swimmers in trouble.

The Fire Department came up with the plan in August after a shark seriously injured a 65-year-old woman by biting her leg in Rockaway Beach.

Fearing new attacks, the department began patrolling the waters flying drones and saw that the most present danger is drowning.

Twenty-three people died in the city from this cause in 2020 alone.

The FDNY is also working on a plan to use drones to launch electromagnetic shark deterrent devices.

City officials said the program is in its early stages.
