The city’s goal is to combat auto theft by helping New Yorkers trace their belongings.
It is a device of “truly astonishing ingenuity”. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is full of praise for Apple’s AirTags. In the form of a key ring, the device is used to track lost objects. This is why the American city has decided to distribute it to its inhabitants.
A total of 500 AirTags will be made available to New York citizens. The town hall announced this Sunday that the devices will be used to fight against car thefts, indicates Business Insider. The GPS trackers will mainly be put into circulation in the Bronx district.
A great tracking device
In December alone, 104 Hyundai and 99 Kia vehicles were stolen, according to the numbers of the New York Police Department. These thefts follow in particular a TikTok trend which showed how to start this type of car without a key.
“The high rate of auto theft continues to increase crime in our city. This simple device, this simple AirTag, hidden in a car in a place that the person is unaware of, is a great tracking device,” said the mayor of new york.
In order to make the AirTag distribution as efficient as possible, the police posted a video on Twitter. It allows people equipped to make good use of the device by teaching them how to hide it in their vehicle.
Regularly, the Apple device shows its usefulness in finding stolen property. This is mainly the case with suitcases at airports. Several networks of criminals have also been brought to light.
